Fresno State students helping people making healthier food choices
Eating healthy can be a challenge, especially if you don't know how to shop for the right foods.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Eating healthy can be a challenge, especially if you don't know how to shop for the right foods. Some Fresno State students are trying to make it a little bit easier for those trying to fix their habits.

When it comes to healthy eating a few Fresno State students are leading the pack. The group is one of three that participated in a program called "Bulldogs in the Grocery Store" led by Fresno State nutrition majors. It takes people in the Central Valley to two Save Mart stores-- one on Willow and Nees and the other on First and Bullard-- teaching them which foods will give them the best dose of vitamins. Haley Gostanian is one of the tour leaders.

"Some common questions they ask are how might I incorporate this in my diet," said Gostanian.

She said taking in more fruits and vegetables strengthens your body and immune system. And Gostanian tells us the key to finding those healthy choices is on the edges.

"We really just want to focus more on the outskirts of the grocery store, not necessarily all of the processed foods in the middle."

Student Maribel Barragan said the 45-minute tour was worth the wait.

"Canned and frozen has kind of gotten a bad rep and she kind of told us that it's not as bad as you think-- and it's cheap."

And the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Nutritional Group tours will go on through May.
