Selma High School student dead after shooting

SELMA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Action News is learning more about the young victim murdered in Selma this weekend. Family members say 14-year-old Cesar Perez Mendoza was shot right outside his family's apartment. He was a freshman at Selma High School.

The shooting happened around 8 a.m. Saturday near Nebraska and Thompson avenues. Relatives say Mendoza was on his way to Saturday school at the time.

Investigators say he was found with several gunshot wounds on a sidewalk. The teenager died at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno late Saturday night.

"Officers from the Selma Police Department over the next several days will be conducting interviews with Cesar's friends and associates to try to ascertain any type of information that might lead to an arrest in this senseless crime," Selma Police Chief Greg Garner said.

"I would like to extend a plea to the community for healing. Let's come together and stop the violence. Let's give our kids a chance to experience life and bright futures," Selma Unified Superintendent Dr. Tanya Fisher said.

The Selma Unified School District will offer counseling to students and staff members on Monday.

Investigators haven't released a motive for the crime or suspect descriptions.
