FRESNO, Calif (KFSN) -- Jimmy Adams thinks this might be his year at the Big Fresno Fair. He's one of the thousands that will head to the fairground racetrack over the next couple weeks hoping to win big.
"I always bet a trifecta which is a pretty high dollar bet but you know so far I haven't lost so far this year yet," Adams says.
The first Friday of races draws one of the largest crowds. People take work off to get to the race track. They'll be reaching out to pickers at the Fair to help with betting decisions.
"I suggest if you like a favorite number, go ahead and put a couple bucks on it," says Fresno Fair Handicapper Robbie Rodriguez.
Rodriguez and countless other betters like to check the horses out before they'll put any sort of money on the race.
"I like my horses to save their energy for the race," Rodriguez says.
There's also plenty of superstitions that go into picks.
"I never bet on a horse that's got wrapped front legs because there's gotta be something wrong and no fat jockey, never a fat jockey," says Dennis Martinez.
The races bring millions of dollars to Fresno. Fair organizers say that last year $22.8 Million was spent in town because of the event.
