MENDOTA, Calif. (KFSN) -- A killer is on the loose and Fresno County Sheriff's deputies are trying to track him down. The suspect shot and killed one man and injured another at a home on Stamoules and Fifth in Mendota late Monday night.

Deputies say the suspect walked up to a garage, opened fire, and just ran away towards Highway 33 about a block away. Investigators are hoping a closer look inside the property will help them figure out why.

Deputies approached the Mendota home carefully, hours after gunfire injured one of the residents and killed a friend. The house now empty, investigators searched inside the home and the garage where a suspect fired at least two shots. But clues were in short supply.

Sgt. Chris Tullus with the Fresno County Sheriff's Officee're treating it as a homicide right now. We don't know what the factors are behind that.

Detectives didn't find guns or drugs inside the home, but around back, they spotted marijuana plants, some fully mature.

Deputies say Brian Cervantes was killed, and a woman who identified herself as his girlfriend collected his bicycle from the home. He was 21-years-old and his girlfriend tells me, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Detectives questioned the woman and they have some leads about people with whom Cervantes might've had contact in the days before the shooting.
