FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- It's called the world's largest Christmas project of its kind and it includes the Central Valley.

Operation Christmas Child delivers shoe boxes full of donated gifts to needy children overseas. Drop off locations opened Monday and will remain open until Monday of next week for national collection week.

They're asking that people fill the shoe boxes with toys, hygiene items, notes of encouragement, and school supplies. "Some of these children cannot go to school because they don't have a pencil, or they don't have a notebook, or they don't have an eraser-- so the school supplies are very important," said Yolanda Callahan, Area Coordinator Operation Christmas Child.

This year, Fresno project coordinators hope to collect 16,000 shoe box gifts.

Five locations in the Fresno area will serve as collection sites.
