FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno Police and local organizations are working to strengthen community ties in crime-ridden neighborhoods.

Saturday afternoon police and local sponsors held a block party in southeast Fresno.

It's an area that's seen an increase in crime and police say it's important to engage with those community members. The event is part of an ongoing effort to connect local non-profits, the police department and neighbors in the area.

"We have a beautiful community out here and it's just a matter of reaching out to them and keeping them safe," Lt. Jose Garza with the Fresno Police Department said.

The Walmart on Kings Canyon donated two bicycles and helmets for a raffle. There was also a bounce house and food giveaway for the kids.
