'Lights On' campaign kicks off for Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern
If you would like to show your support for a wounded Fresno firefighter, it's as simple as flipping a switch.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- If you would like to show your support for a wounded Fresno firefighter, it's as simple as flipping a switch.

The "Lights On for Captain Pete Dern" campaign officially kicked off on Sunday. Residents are being asked to leave their porch lights on until Dern comes home from the hospital. You can even switch out your normal porch light for a red one, which is the color used by fire stations.

Dern remains in critical condition with severe burns after falling through the roof of a home that went up in flames last weekend.

"Pete's going to have a long road, months and months, so the community is getting involved, and this is just one example of that," said Captain William Veiga of the Fresno Fire Department.

A family friend made a large sign that's now posted on the fire station at Fresno Street and Barstow Avenue. It also asks residents to donate blood or make a contribution through the YouCaring website to avoid any possible scams.
