Man injures officer trying to avoid DUI checkpoint, police say
A man is in jail after Fresno Police say he injured an officer while trying to avoid a DUI checkpoint.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- It happened near 1st Street and Platt Avenue around 10 p.m. Friday. Authorities say 25-year-old Tory Simmons put his car in reverse and hit the gas when he spotted the checkpoint. He nearly hit an officer who was who was setting up a sign behind him.

"I don't know whether he knew the officer was there or not, but the officer had to make a quick move to get out of the way and injured his knee when that happened," said Sgt. Richard Tucker, Fresno Police Department.

Another officer in the area got in a short pursuit with Simmons and caught him nearby. Authorities say the suspect took a breathalyzer test that showed he was just above the legal limit at .08. He was also on probation and did not have a license.

Simmons was arrested on several charges. The injured officer was checked at a local hospital and is expected to be okay.
