Fresno neighborhood rattled after morning homicide

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno Police say a person was killed Monday morning in a shooting at the Ranchwood Condos near Chestnut and Butler Avenues.

Gunshots rattled the Southeast Fresno neighborhood, where crime scene tape and police worried parents after a man was shot and killed and the suspect got away.

Neighbors in the complex near Fresno Pacific University were busy getting their kids ready for school when the shooting happened and witnesses told police that the suspect got away on a scooter.

Police cars with flashing lights and crime scene tape surrounded a building where the 45-year-old man was shot.

"I was barely waking up," resident Patricia Regalado said. "I didn't hear nothing, I didn't hear anything."

Fresno police say the man stepped out his unit to warm up his car that was sitting in the parking lot. As he turned to go back inside his condo, he was shot.

Detectives say his family was nearby when it happened.

"His girlfriend or wife was there at the apartment," Lt. Joe Gomez with the Fresno Police Department said. "So his immediate family was there and then others, I'm assuming they live here because to get here that quick, but they were very upset of course."

Investigators say now the search for the suspect is on. They describe him as a Hispanic juvenile male who is around 5 feet 4 inches tall.

There are reports he was wearing a gray hoodie at the time of the shooting, and police tell Action News that the suspect used a sawed-off rifle and rode off on a silver push-scooter made for kids.

Regalado is hoping surveillance cameras spread out across the complex will help police find him, but until then she says she will not let this make her family feel unsafe.

"No, I'm not concerned because I don't have no problems going on in and out no problems whatsoever," she said.
